After using a garment steamer for about 2 hours, the tip of my right thumb has been numb since 9 March. Is this serious? Do I need to see a doctor?

Hi @NIG . Thank you for your question!

In this scenario it would be prudent to see a doctor for full examination. Patients often don't realise if they have weakness if it is very slight and this would usually require examination by a physician. Though, given the activity that you think might have caused it, it sounds very unlikely that there could be a nerve injury involved or at worst maybe a mild compression of one of the small branches of the nerve from pressure.

Best to see a doctor early if it is bothering you for some reassurance! Hope this helps!

Hi Dr. Adnaan S,

The garment steamer (or rather iron cum steamer) is new and rather heavy as compared to the previous one we had but damaged. It was my first time using it then. Do you think it can be a health issue and warrant a doctor visit?

Hi @NIG , sounds like it’s possible that it was difficult for you to grasp and your might have placed excessive pressure around your thumb/wrist region. I would advise that if the numbness worsens/appears to spread to your other fingers (mainly index and middle finger)/ start feeling weak and unable to grip objects, you should see your GP.

Of note perhaps you can consider a trial of neurobion which has shown some evidence in treatment of nerve related inflammation/numbness/pain.

At present it does not sound very serious but it does seem to be bothering you. I always tell my patients if something is bothering you/impairing your life, it is worth just getting it checked as soon as you are able. Like I mentioned, most of the causes are relatively benign in my experience.

Oh though this does not sound like it could possibly be a stroke, always be aware of alarm symptoms in the neurological symptoms which includes (but not limited to) things like half body parenthesis/weakness/loss of balance/loss of spatial awareness/facial asymmetry/blur vision/speech or swallowing impairment/fainting of unknown cause.

I hope this helps!
