I am a 40-year-old male and I have an issue of intermittent involuntary nocturnal swallowing and throat-clearing for the last 6 weeks.
When the issue occurs, I involuntarily swallow and clear my throat.
If I try to stop, I cannot. With every passing second, the urge to swallow intensifies until I find it impossible to overcome the urge to swallow. At that point I swallow again.
Following each swallow comes an urge to clear my throat. And the cycle continues.
The urge to swallow comes with a sensation that my uvula is coated with excess mucus that must be cleared.
This condition interferes with my sleep and makes it impossible to sleep normally.
The issue is more likely to occur when I am in a lying-down position.
My doctor did a visual inspection of my throat with the naked eye and found nothing unusual.
How do I treat this condition?
Thank you.
