How long does it take for my elbow to recover after a fall from a bike?

I have a fall from bike which I used my palm to break the fall. There’s no injury/scratches on my leg at all after the fall. Most of the impact went into my elbow. I couldn’t fully extend my elbow with pain and I am not able to touch my shoulder with my finger. Some sign of blue black can been seen. It has been 12 days since the injury. I went TCM , given medication and bandage for a day, follow by a bottle of spray. It’s getting better but still not fully. My question would be how Long the recovery should be? Should I do x ray ? And by when I need to see a doctor if not recovering fully. No follow up require by tcm . Thanks

Dear Rach

I would suggest getting an Xray of the elbow to rule out a fracture or any possible dislocation. It's not uncommon to have a fracture of the elbow when there is axial loading post fall from a bicycle. Especially since your range of movement is limited, I am concerned about any possible bleeding into the joint and swelling that could arise from a fracture or dislocation or ligament tear.

It would be recommended to see an orthopaedic surgeon to do a detailed examination of the elbow and evaluate with Xrays or even possibly a MRI scan.

@Rach
Thanks Dr Ramesh, I have since obtained x ray at clinic and was referred to orthopaedic for further evaluation. There’s no fracture or dislocation detected. There’s some suggestion of effusion and occult fracture which the doctor unable to rule out.
Appreciate your time for  giving your advice.

In this situation, I would advise that you get a MRI scan of your elbow to rule out occult fracture or soft tissue damage. Hope you recover well
