8 Questions with Dr Jade Kua

Published29 Sep 2021

How would you introduce yourself?

I am an advocate for holistic health. I am a senior consultant in the field of emergency medicine with a niche in pediatric trauma. I also founded several companies in the realm of mental and emotional wellness including a life-coaching company and an aromatherapy skincare brand, Straits Skincare.

What motivated you to study medicine?

I enjoy how it’s the perfect balance of art and science.

What's your specialty and why did you choose it?

I am a specialist in emergency medicine with a Masters in Trauma Sciences. I like the fast pace and pressure to make good decisions.

What are your goals for the future?

I want to normalise mental health care and self-care. Mental and emotional health aren’t just about not getting sick, it’s about daily maintenance so you don’t fall into traps like burnout syndrome.

What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced and obstacles you've had to overcome?

I guess there’s often a feeling of isolation when you’re a shift worker and it’s harder with a family.

The gender gap is a real challenge; I’m sure I have completely overcome it.

Have you found anything particularly helpful in your journey to where you are today?

Where I have had the support of my community- that includes bosses and peers and juniors, I have thrived. It’s helpful to have colleagues who understand and believe in what you’re trying to do, even if there has been no precedent.

What's your advice for doctors who are just starting out?

Be curious, humble and resilient.

Where can we go to learn more about you and your work?

My personal blog is on www.drjadekua.com and my coaching website is www.jadelifeandwellness.com
