SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr Ganesh Ramalingan: The Doctor Who Finds Great Joy in Seeing his Patients Live Better, Healthier Lives Growing up surrounded by rambutan trees, farm animals and two water wells from where the family drew their daily water – Dr Ganesh Ramalingan of G&L Surgical Clinic has come a long way from his idyllic childhood kampung in Sembawang. Today, Dr Ganesh feels at home in the surgical theatre, wielding his precise scalpel that he uses with great finesse and care as he expertly performs keyhole surgeries. In his work at G&L Surgical these days, he specialises in Bariatric Surgery, which includes life-changing procedures such as Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and Intragastric Balloon inserted Endoscopically. Ever since his schooling days, Dr Ganesh has always aspired to be a surgeon. After all, surgery was the perfect marriage of his desire to help people, and his deep interest in the practical aspect of medicine. After graduating from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Medicine, Dr Ganesh went on to complete his post-graduate training and Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He was subsequently sent to Israel for a year to specialise in trauma and keyhole surgery. Upon his return to Singapore, Dr Ganesh gained vast experience in the trauma departments in the public hospitals around Singapore, and eventually led the teams to develop and set up the Weight Management Centre and Bariatric Surgery Departments in Alexandra Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and trauma teams in both hospitals. Since taking his leave from the public hospital, Dr Ganesh has been keeping extremely busy in his specialities of gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, laparoscopy and endoscopy. He now heads his clinic, G&L Surgical, at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. When he is not working to better the lives of his patients in his practice, he serves in the Football Association of Singapore Medical Committee, helping to put in place policies that take care of the health and wellbeing of the members of the Singapore football team. Dr Ganesh also has a keen heart for the underprivileged and is truly intent on making a difference in the lives of people. He makes it a point to participate in voluntary initiatives several times a year to spread some cheer and distribute items those who are in need; as well as make monetary contributions to causes he believes in. Most recently, he, along with his team, have worked with Bethel Community Services to personally distribute festive goodies to 50 underprivileged households this Chinese New Year season. Dr Ganesh is also a staunch believer in taking part in humanitarian efforts when disaster strikes; he had previously served in the medical teams of the 2004 tsunami that wreaked havoc in Banda Aceh, and the 2006 earthquake that struck Yogyakarta. It is ultimately his desire to change the lives of those around him that make Dr Ganesh an exceptional doctor. One of his most memorable cases in his long history in the field of gastrointestinal surgery was an 18-year old diabetic boy who was suffering from the complications of obesity exacerbated by his diabetes, which was getting worse by the year. His mother had taken him to Dr Ganesh in the hopes of controlling his weight, and Dr Ganesh successfully performed a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy that helped the boy quickly reduce his weight by 30kg, and more importantly stop all diabetic medications. Drastically making an improvement in the lives of such patients who’d otherwise have to spend their entire lives taking medicine to keep weight-related diseases and diabetes under control is what Dr Ganesh finds most meaningful about his job now. On what is the most fulfilling aspect of his work, Dr Ganesh says with a smile “Just the joy of seeing patients get better, recover, and appreciate my work; that is what fuels me every day,”.
